Equilibrium sediment transport by dilute turbidity currents: Comparison of competence?based and capacity?based models
نویسندگان
چکیده
Equilibrium sediment transport is the condition of zero net entrainment and deposition by sediment-transporting flow (i.e. grade or regime). Here criteria for equilibrium transport, those used as proxies (for example, onset erosion, particle setting suppression turbulence) dilute, suspended-load-dominated, turbidity currents, are tested against laboratory natural data. The examined restricted to describing over a bed loose particulate material involving non-cohesive sediment. Models include both monodisperse polydisperse formulations that represent non-uniformity using single characteristic grain size discretization grain-size distribution, respectively. Analysis shows polydisperse-type flux-balance model, equates erosional depositional fluxes where erosion related power lift mass from (the ‘Flow-Power Flux-Balance’ model) provides predictions most consistent with observational Other models tested, polydisperse, fail predict realistic slopes and/or durations concentrations, velocities depths within limits flows. Results Flow-Power Flux-Balance model quantify fields, Shields numbers currents variable properties.

Sediment Waves and Gullies Generated by Turbidity Currents
Our objective is to improve our understanding of the genesis of large-scale bed forms similar to those observed in various submarine settings, and thought to be created by both confined and laterallyspreading turbidity currents and related dense underflows in continental slopes and rises. Two types of bed forms are the main focus of this work. First, slope gullies, which are parallel, evenly-sp...
متن کاملSediment Transport by Mud Flows and Turbidity Currents in Continental Margins
This research has two main components. The first component addresses the evolution of mud flows (i.e. dense gravity currents) on submarine slopes, with the goal of developing the capabilities to predict the velocity, thickness, and run-out distance of mud flows. The second component of the research involves experiments on non-channelized turbidity currents (i.e. dilute density currents) and the...
متن کاملTurbidity Currents and Seabed Morphology
Our main goal is to assess the hydrodynamics of turbidity currents and mudflows and their ability to produce morphological features such as ripples, dunes, antidunes and gullies along their paths. Of particular interest is to elucidate the role played by turbidity currents on the inception of submarine channels and canyons. To this end, understanding the mechanics of sediment erosion, including...
متن کاملTurbidity Currents and Their Deposits
The article surveys the current state of our understanding of turbidity currents, with an emphasis on their fluid mechanics. It highlights the significant role these currents play within the global sediment cycle, and their importance in environmental processes and in the formation of hydrocarbon reservoirs. Events and mechanisms governing the initiation of turbidity currents are reviewed, alon...
متن کاملXylene removal from dilute solution by palm kernel activated charcoal: Kinetics and equilibrium analysis
Xylene is an aromatic hydrocarbon that is a highly toxic compound. Therefore, it is essential to remove this component from wastewater before discharging it to the environment. In this research work, palm kernel biomass was activated chemically by H3PO4 and synthesized activated charcoal was applied to separate xylene from aqueous media. The prepared activated charcoal was characterized using F...
